Both the Cardigan and Pembroke Welsh Corgi breeds have a great deal of similarities. In fact, they were thought to be same for many years till breeders found some slight differences. They originated from central Europe and made their way to Wales. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi was developed in Cardiganshire while the Pembroke Welsh Corgi was developed in Pembrokeshire.
Both Corgi breeds appear fox-like and have short legs. They have similar physical attributes with only some slight differences. Their tail is one of the most distinct trait to tell them apart. If the tail is long and fox-like, you’re looking at a Cardigan. If the tail is short and docked, say hello to a Pembroke.
Another way to tell the difference between the two is by examining their ears. A Pembroke’s ears are erect and pointed, while the Cardigan has more rounded ears. Besides that, the Pembroke has oval like feet with the front feet remaining straight or turned inwards while the Cardigan’s feet are round and their front feet curved outwards. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is also slightly heavier than the Pembroke.
People who wish for a companion dog usually prefer Pembroke Welsh Corgi over the Cardigan as the Pembroke is more affectionate and has a better temperament. Due to these two attributes, they don’t make very good guard dogs but the Cardigan is slightly better than the Pembroke.
In regards of the health and life expectancy of both Cardigan and Pembroke Welsh Corgi, the Cardigan generally has fewer health problems.
