In a statement released by South African National Parks (SANParks) on 3rd May 2019, the authorities have arrested a high profile individual and his accomplice following an intelligence driven anti-poaching operation.
The high profile suspect apprehended turns out to be a former corporal who works in the Rangers Services but was dismissed in 2014.
Managing Executive of the Kruger National Park, Glenn Phillips said “We have been after this particular individual for some time now, and are pleased that he has been captured and we will wait for the law to take its course. The justice system needs to consider the severe damage that is being done by criminals, not only to the sustainability of our rhino populations but also the long-term threat to the tourism industry of this country, and deliver harsh sentences.”
Authorities also recovered a high caliber hunting rifle, ammunition and poaching equipment at the scene.
The suspects will be appear in court as soon as the charges have been formally filed.
